A 17-day journey, eight traveling screenings, dozens of artists involved and hundreds of people reached across communities living inside Limpopo National Park in Mozambique. A new awareness campaign officially began today, promoted by Fondazione Imagine together with CIRAD (Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement), the French research organization focused on flora and fauna in tropical areas.

The project, called One Health, is based on a simple but essential principle: the health of humans, animals and the environment is deeply interconnected. Protecting ecosystems also means preventing the spread of diseases transmitted between animals and people, especially in fragile and vulnerable contexts.

Representing Fondazione Imagine in this new operational phase is Matteo Crespan, who departed from Maputo with the local team to reach Limpopo National Park, where a series of cultural and participatory activities will take place in the districts of Massingir and Mabalane.

The project uses cinema and theater as tools for dialogue and awareness-raising. During the journey, eight public screenings will be organized: in each district there will be an institutional event involving local authorities, along with three screenings held directly within the communities living inside the park.

These are territories where the relationship between people and wildlife is extremely close. Through audiovisual storytelling, public discussion and theatrical performances, the project aims to raise awareness about the environmental and health risks connected to the relationship between humans, animals and nature.

The activities will involve a local theater company made up of around twenty actors, who will accompany the tour with performances focused on the theme of shared health and environmental protection. Alongside the theater activities, Fondazione Imagine’s traveling cinema project — one of the Foundation’s core initiatives and for years a key tool for community engagement and awareness campaigns across several African countries — will play a central role.

At the heart of the traveling cinema project is the power of images and collective cinematic experiences as opportunities for encounter, dialogue and participation. Thanks to a mobile structure and a specialized team, the caravan is able to reach even the most remote areas, organizing events capable of involving entire local communities.

As part of the One Health project, audiences will watch an animated film produced by CIRAD explaining the themes of prevention and environmental health, introductory music videos, and a six-episode documentary series dedicated to the relationship between humans, animals and nature. Each screening will also include moments of discussion and dialogue with local communities.

The journey will also serve as an opportunity for field research and monitoring. Traveling with the team are two researchers from the University of Maputo, engaged in collecting interviews, testimonies and research materials connected to the project.

The overall goal is to reach hundreds of people across the different communities involved, creating spaces for dialogue that are accessible, participatory and culturally close to local populations. This is an approach Fondazione Imagine has promoted for years through social cinema and artistic languages as tools for change, inclusion and collective awareness.
