Using analog methods to reflect on the digital world. This is how IM-PATTO Digitale, our Foundation’s participatory photography project involving dozens of young people, was born. Last spring, we invited a group of children and teenagers to observe the world through a return to slow photography. The workshop allowed us to engage them in a discussion about the power of images, especially in the era of social media. On October 18, we had the pleasure of sharing the results of this experience at the Ethical Photography Festival in Lodi. We presented the photographs created by the participants and shared the creative and educational journey that produced them.

The project included three workshop sessions. In the first, led by our photographer Andrea Borgarello, participants explored the basics of photographic technique and discussed the role of images in communication. Using smartphones and tablets, they experimented with their first shots, discovering how each photograph can tell different stories depending on who views it and who creates it. In the second workshop, led by a digital expert, the group delved into online visual language: how emotions are transformed into emojis, and how tone is amplified or lost on social media. Through practical exercises and discussions, the participants learned to recognize both the risks and opportunities of visual communication in the digital world, developing a more critical and conscious approach to the images that surround them every day.

The transition to analog photography was at the heart of the project. Using disposable cameras, each participant experienced the patience and surprise of waiting for their photos to develop. Learning to look before shooting, choosing what to include in the frame and what to leave out: an exercise in observation and reflection that contrasts with the speed of digital media. The final photographs were showcased during the Cinema Under the Stars evening, a moment of sharing where children and families could reflect together on the stories and emotions captured in the frames. The workshop’s results revealed intimate and authentic images, depicting friendships, places, and feelings, as well as a new, more thoughtful way of engaging with the digital world.

With IM-PATTO Digitale, we aim to combine creativity, education, and responsibility. Learning to photograph is not just about taking pictures: it is about learning to see, observing the world with new eyes, and understanding the times we live in through the perspectives of others.

Usare l'analogico per riflettere sul digitale. Da qui nasce IM-PATTO Digitale, il progetto di fotografia partecipativa della nostra Fondazione che ha coinvolto decine di ragazzi. La scorsa primavera abbiamo proposto a un gruppo di bambini e adolescenti di osservare il mondo tramite un ritorno alla fotografia lenta. Un laboratorio che ci ha permesso di avviare insieme a loro una discussione sul potere delle immagini, soprattutto nell’era dei social network. E, il 18 ottobre, abbiamo avuto il piacere di restituire l’esito di questa esperienza al Festival della Fotografia Etica di Lodi. Abbiamo presentato le fotografie realizzate dai partecipanti e raccontato il percorso creativo ed educativo che le ha generate.

Il progetto ha previsto tre incontri di laboratorio. Nel primo, guidati dal nostro fotografo Andrea Borgarello, i partecipanti hanno esplorato le basi della tecnica fotografica e discusso sul ruolo delle immagini nella comunicazione. Con smartphone e tablet hanno sperimentato i primi scatti, scoprendo come ogni fotografia possa raccontare storie diverse a seconda di chi la guarda e di chi la crea. Nel secondo laboratorio, condotto da un’esperta di digitale, il gruppo ha approfondito il linguaggio visivo online: come un’emozione si trasforma in emoji, come il tono si amplifica o si perde sui social. Attraverso esercizi pratici e momenti di confronto, i ragazzi hanno imparato a riconoscere rischi e opportunità della comunicazione visiva nel mondo digitale, sviluppando un approccio più critico e consapevole alle immagini che ogni giorno li circondano.

Il passaggio alla fotografia analogica ha rappresentato il cuore del progetto. Con una macchina fotografica usa e getta, ogni partecipante ha potuto sperimentare la pazienza e la sorpresa di attendere lo sviluppo delle proprie foto. Imparare a guardare prima di scattare, scegliere cosa includere nel fotogramma e cosa lasciare fuori: un esercizio di osservazione e riflessione che contrasta l’abitudine alla rapidità del digitale. Le fotografie finali sono state presentate durante la serata di Cinema sotto le stelle, un momento di condivisione in cui ragazzi e famiglie hanno potuto confrontarsi sulle storie e sulle emozioni raccontate dai fotogrammi. I risultati del laboratorio hanno mostrato immagini intime e autentiche, che parlano di amicizie, luoghi e sentimenti, ma anche di un nuovo modo di rapportarsi con il digitale, più attento e consapevole.
