We are in Guinea Conakry, at the border with Mali, in the Kankan province, and our foundation is working on a project funded by ECES and the EU. We train local journalists in preparation for an important moment for the country: the referendum on September 21. After years of military junta rule, people will, for the first time, have a choice before them. Consider that it is not even clear how many people live here; the last census—which the international community also considers unreliable—dates back to 2014.

Our work these days in Guinea, also alongside Monica Peruzzi, is to train local journalists to read data, understand what happens when false information is spread by institutions, report, and carry out investigations. What we do is truly wonderful: meeting them and being with them is a commitment that rewards us. Our Monica will return richer from this experience, and we, too, gain so much through her stories.

And then there is Iacopo Valori, a young colleague who went with us to provide support and who will continue the campaign once Monica has returned.

Siamo in Guinea Conakry al confine con il Mali, nella provincia di Kankan e la nostra fondazione lavora ad un progetto finanziato da ECES e l'UE. Formiamo giornalisti locali in vista di un appuntamento importante per il Paese: il referendum del 21 settembre, dopo anni in cui la giunta militare ha preso il potere le persone avranno per la prima volta una scelta di fronte a loro. Pensate che non si sa neanche quanti abitanti ci siano, l'ultimo censimento - anch'esso ritenuto non attendibile dalla comunità internazionale - risale al 2014.

Il nostro lavoro, in questi giorni in Guinea anche con Monica Peruzzi, è quello di formare i giornalisti locali a leggere i dati, capire cosa succede quando vengono diffuse informazioni false dalle istituzioni, raccontare, fare un’inchiesta. E' bellissimo ciò che facciamo: incontrarli, stare insieme a loro è un impegno che ci premia. La nostra Monica tornerà più ricca e anche noi lo siamo tramite i suoi racconti.
